ACFO Director Brian Ingham attended the "Safer Business Driving" conference in York on Thursday 18th Jume.  He delivered a paper and presentation on ACFO's support for the Road Safety agenda for at-work drivers.

The meeting was attended by around 50 fleets and local authority delegates who heard a range of presentations on this important topic.  AIRSO, Zurich Insurance, Royal Mail all spoke on the different aspects of the conference subject.  There was also a paper from an HSE Inspector, to deliver the real circumstances of failure to prepare a fleet policy covering at-work drivers.

All the presentations mentioned the stark fact that Duty of Care and managing on-road risk lies at the door of the employer - irrespective of the "fleet" arrangements or ownership of the vehicles.  This seemd to come as a shock to some members of the audience who clearly imagined that "grey fleet" vehicles were outside the scope of employer responsibility.

Brian's presentation included a very stark case study based on his own direcrt experience as an employer.  The bald facts of the incident, the clarity of the company paperwork and policies and all the eveidence compeletly exonerated the company, and led to the successful prosecution of a third-party driver.
