DVLA has announced that it is adding extra safeguards to further protect the personal information of Britain's motorists.
Earlier in the year DVLA consulted on proposals to make parking companies that request driver vehicle information manually, ie by post, subject to the same rules as those requesting this information electronically.
From 23rd November 2009, all car parking companies requesting DVLA information, whether it's manually or electronically, to enable a parking charge notice to be issued will have to be a member of a DVLA Accredited Trade Association (ATA). In addition, by 22nd February 2010, each company will need to demonstrate full compliance with their ATA's code of practice. This includes, amongst other things, the requirement to provide appropriate signage so that motorists are clear about the parking restrictions in place.
The British Parking Association is an Accredited Trade Association mentioned by the DVLA in their communication. Their web-site is http://www.britishparking.co.uk/.
The announcement was made 27th August 2009 and clarifies some aspects of the arrangements for release of data about registered keepers of vehicles (including company-registered vehicles).
The link to the DVLA on its FAQs about vehicle keeper data release can be found on this link: http://www.dvla.gov.uk/data/FAQ
Note that this is quite separate from the issue of release of entitlement information from the driver licensing record - something on which ACFO continues to campaign.
If we become aware of further information we will ensure that members are made aware as soon as possible.
