Over 150 members and guests attended the Conference and AGM today (Tuesday 18th May), at the MINI Plant in Cowley, kindly hosted by BMW Group. This makes it the largest-ever event organised by ACFO.
The event included 3 major topical presentations and two Newsflashes about ACFO initiatives. The day's proceedings were concluded with the Annual General Meeting.
The major presentation was delivered by the 4-strong team from Stafford Fire & Rescue Service. This was a careful, considered analysis of the aftermath of a serious/ fatal road traffic collision. All the implications were discussed and analysed - giving the audience lots to think about. This powerful presentation brings home the need for all fleet operators to ensure that their processes for managing on-road risks is carefully considered, regularly reviewed and properly monitored.
Two experts from Deloitte gave a detailed presentation on Salary Sacrifice Schemes, with checklists of the many stages to be considered to ensure any scheme actually delivers what is expected. This type of arrangement is attracting a great deal of interest in the UK fleet market, but each operator's circumstances must be evaluated to avoid costly mistakes.
The final presentation was delivered by Richard Bentley, a retired police officer who campaigns for fairness and legality over parking tickets. Apparently, many tickets are issued with an imperfect legal backing - and are therefore invalid. Local Authorities appear to be guilty of many mistakes over the precise markings and dimensions of parking bays. Lots of food for thought!
Copies of these slides are available for download to logged-in members, directly from the Library section of the ACFO web-site.
ACFO Chairman Julie Jenner also announced 2 new initiatives from ACFO.
The Conference event was the launchpad of the "ACFO Best Practice Guide to Employee Driving Document Checking" - developed in conjunction with (former) Labour MP Dr Stephen Ladyman. This booklet covers all aspects of checking the necessary documents for employees who drive company cars and vans, as well as those employees who drive their own cars on employer's business. Although developed with government departments and other public sector fleets in mind, this new Guide applies to any fleet. Logged-in ACFO Members can download a pdf copy of the Guide from the web-site library or clicking here.
The formal AGM saw the re-election of Julie Jenner and Stewart Whyte to the ACFO Board, both having retired by rotation. The AGM also concluded the other formalities needed to ensure the organisation remains fit and well, to serve the interests of the members.
